Kristal ClarkSenior Yoga Teacher (SYT) Leeds England
![]()
I started my journey with yoga as a student and by accident. It was out of curiosity that I attended a university yoga class which introduced me to relaxation, some postures and meditation. This experience inspired me so much that I bought a book on yoga from which I practised, casually at the time. I then joined a meditation course and was initiated into Transcendental Meditation. The book was Light On Yoga, by BKS Iyengar, about whom I knew nothing. It was not until the late 80s that I came across an
evening class in London which, coincidentally, was an Iyengar Yoga class. Since then I have not looked back and have trained to Intermediate Level with the Iyengar school of yoga, which included a three-week teachers' Intensive course in India. I like to share my passion for the subject in my teaching just as I have been inspired from my own varied and many experiences. For personal reasons, I trained with Brian Cooper on his 200hour course of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, in Leeds and have completed a Yoga Course from the Gitananda style of yoga which is based upon the tantric aspect of yoga breathing with less emphasis on physical postures. My other interests in spiritual pratice include Mindfulness and Meditation. Important infuences in my learning and teaching have been many Iyengar teachers, also Dona Holleman and Donna Farhi both of whom are internationally recognized and originally trained in the Iyengar method. They have developed their own particular styles of yoga: integrating movement, breath and alignment. My experience has been gathered from many other teachers both from the UK and internationally and I continue to attend Iyengar workshops annually to keep up-to-date with teaching methods. I offer 6 classes weekly in Leeds for all levels of student and offer workshops at Beginner or Intermediate Levels throughout the year. In my teaching, I emphasize alignment in the postures and encourage breath awareness and the use of the breath specifically to help release in postures. The flow of the breath helps to soften and open the body so that the release can happen. We cannot move well without the breath, and awareness of how we are using the breath is integral to yoga practice. My Beginners' classes are focussed on basic stretching, strengthening and bringing movement to the body before introducing focussed breathwork.. My intermediate classes take the practices further.
