Mariella De MartiniSenior Yoga Teacher (SYT) Oxford United Kingdom
![]()
Based in Oxford, I was first introduced to Astanga by Danny Paradise in 1992. His inspirational style and lightness of touch meant I was able to establish a daily practice without much effort, which within a few months led me to heal of chronic respiratory problems. This gave me great belief in Yoga's ability to empower people to self-heal, so when Danny suggested I should start sharing the practice, I went into it with a blind faith that it would work out.
Oxford was about to become a capital of Astanga gatherings. Here I was able to access some of the other "first generation Western disciples" of Pattabhi Jois. John Scott, Lino Miele, David Swenson, David Williams, Richard Freeman and many more, all with their own unique uptake on the practice. All One with the practice. Soon I made my way to India to study with Guruji and met him again and again, each time he made it to the UK. I was also able to study with Sharon Gannon and David Life who founded Jivamukti in New York and found their approach enchanting in the way the brought in all the other aspects of Yoga and were not shy to use poetry, music, chanting, readings, psychology and philosophy into the class. I also studied with Traditional Yoga master Kumar and Duncan Wong, who ingeniously brings together Martial Arts and Yoga. I've had a feast! My formal training to teach happened a little later, in 2004, when John and Lucy Scott did their first and only 2 year intensive Teacher Training in Cornwall, together with anatomist David Keil and Swami Nitymuktananda. During this time it was wonderful to have the opportunity to go deeper in the various aspects of the practice and gradually come to grips with the delicate and profound art of adjusting. I teach both led and Mysore Astanga classes. But I also love leading Vinyasa Flow. I take on some private pupils when it is necessary for them to have a temporary individual approach, but as soon as possible I encourage them to join in the classes to share the energy and be plugged into the "tribe". I have also found myself taking on the role of unofficial mentor to those called to teach and upon their request shared with them the art of adjusting.
